Vertical COURTING: Man in a Dark �Skunk� Blanket and Woman in Red-and-Blue Garments Stand before a Red Tipi The man's face is painted red vertically along the hairline. His visible braid is wrapped in otter fur, with the ends dangling. He wears a German silver hairplate ornament tied to his scalplock, and it reaches the ground. It ends with two streamers of red cloth. His dark �skunk� (see Plate 9 discussion) is pulled up to his chin. His leggings are dark stroud cloth with a vertical stripe (undyed selvedge ends sewn together), and his breech clout flaps show below the blanket, reaching to the ground; they are red with undyed edges. The woman stands before the tent. Her face is in profile, and one eye is drawn in. She wears a red dress made of stroud cloth, with undyed selvedges creating a white cuff edging. Her braid falls across her front. She is wrapped In a blue shawl or blanket; or she may wear a dress with blue panels sewed in. Across her middle is a white band, perhaps a sash with three dark spots of decoration. Red leggings show below the blue blanket, and her foot is outlined in blue. The tipi is red with an edging of red-and-blue outlining it. The smokehole flap is open, and a blue tassel flies from the opening. Seven poles are gathered at the top. The woman�s dress and tipi match closely.
