COURTING: Man on Blue Pinto Holds Fan toward Woman in Red

Ethnographic Notes

Horizontal COURTING: Man on Blue Pinto Holds Fan toward Woman in Red A man on a pinto with blue markings, on the right-hand side of the page, greets a woman in a red blanket. The man holds an eagle-feather fan (see Plates 28, 30, 47). He wears a German silver hairplate ornament that reaches to the ground. It ends with a blue tassel. He wears a hairpipe breastplate in two sections. The fan, held in his outstretched right hand, has four immature golden eagle feathers, with no tip or handle or streamers. His outstretched left hand is empty. His shirt is dark cloth, and he wears a blue stroud blanket wrapped around his waist, with the undyed selvedge edge arranged to show. The woman has one long braid draped down her front shoulder. An abbreviated eye is marked on her profiled face. Her blanket is solid orange (crayon fill). The edge of a sash shows at the hem of her dress. Her legs are uncolored, and four stripes (trails) mark each ankle.
