Horizontal COURTING: Man on Red Horse Courts a Woman in First-phase Chief's Blanket The man on the horse holds the eagle feather fan seen in this ledger (Plates 28, 30, 47, 50). He holds a bone quirt with two strands over the horse's rear (see Petersen 1983: 294, fig. 26). His braid is wrapped in otter fur. His long shirt is dark cloth with a placard of red and white ornament down the center, probably beadwork. He wars German silver arm bands. Below his dark stroud blanket, wrapped around his waist, his legging shows. It is dark cloth with one vertical stripe (undyed selvedge seam). The man holds the fan in his right hand, outstretched toward the woman. He also holds the horse�s reins in his right hand. The woman has her back to the man. Her wrapped braid falls forward across her shoulder. Her face is painted with red markings. The showy first-phase Navajo chief�s blanket was acquired through trade. Her red decorative dress panels show beneath the blanket. She wears blue leggings. Her ankles have two stripes. Her moccasins also have some detail�two stripes. This is one of the few instances in the 1879 Dodge City ledgers where moccasins are shown in any detail. The red sorrel horse has dark ears, hooves and tail.
