COURTING: Woman in Red Dress Meets Man in Black Blanket and Hairplate Ornament

Ethnographic Notes

Horizontal COURTING: Woman in Red Dress Meets Man in Black Blanket and Hairplate Ornament This begins a long series of courtship images (Plates 41-68). See Plate 9 for Grinnell's description of the formal dress of courtship, as well as the conventions of the man accosting the woman. The man on the right stands in the middle of the page, facing the woman arriving on a horse, and the horses reins lead to the man. He wears a long German silver hairplate ornament attached to the back of his head at the scalplock. It falls below his feet in the drawing, with red tassel at the end. His upper body has a striped red design showing, perhaps a breastplate. The rest of his formal outfit is a dark blanket, breechclout flaps showing under the blanket, and leggings. The woman wears a red dress with white edging on the visible sleeve (undyed selvedge of the stroud trade cloth). She has no facepaint, and her hair falls behind her. She carries a quirt in her right hand, held over the horses rear, which suggest motion, as well as the hair and the horses upraised front legs. The womans left hand is shown behind the horses neck. Two strands of a necklace show around her neck, traced in black (crayon); a square in the middle of her bodice is traced in blackornament or perhaps a bag. She wears a first-phase Navajo blanket wrapped around her middle, and one leg is visible against the side of the horse. It has three stripes or trails (see discussion Plate 3). The horse is outlined in black, with lighter gray for the body and darker markings for the upper legs. The hooves are uncolored.
