HUNTING: Man on Blue Horse Shoots Elk with Rifle

Ethnographic Notes

Horizontal HUNTING SCENE: Man on Blue Horse Shoots Elk with Rifle The diptych (two pages) of a hunt illustrates successful killing of a large bull elk. The hunter in a red shirt rides a blue roan horse and holds a quirt (see Plate 8 for more discussion of blue roan horses). He shoots the male elk with a rifle, and the bullet penetrates the back of the elk and passes through the elks heart. Blood indicates this is a fatal would. The elk is outlined in pencil with head and shoulders shaded a darker color. The elk has an eight point rack of antlers. His ribs are indicated with five lines. Other details are his tail and split hooves. He has no eyes. The man has a red shirt, probably cloth. He wears a dark headband, but no hair is evident. His torso is elongated and curves unnaturally. He wears a dark (lead pencil shaded) stroud-cloth breech cloutboth flaps show against the side of the horse. He does not appear to wear leggings, and his feet are minimally represented. His left hand holds the rifle and the horses reins. The rifle has a shortened stock, typical of carbines. It is outlined in both dark (lead pencil) and red. The mans right hand holds a quirt to urge the horse forward. The quirt itself is rectangular with a lozenge decoration on it, and two strands are attached to it. The horse has a blue body and head, but with dark legs and tail. The hooves are drawn distinctly and without coloring. The head is unnaturally small.
