A large, domesticated dog chasing a jack rabbit, in Lakota mastincala (Buechel, 1970: 333). Before the Lakota obtained horses, around 1670, their only draft animals were dogs (in Lakota, sunka). Large-boned dogs had been bred especially to aid in dragging small travois, on which a family's possessions, as well as their tipi cover, could be transported from camp to camp. Compare Plates 18 & 7.
