ANIMALS, BUFFALO: Large Female Buffalo and Calf; R, WARRIOR, Warrior on Red Horse Carries a Saber

Ethnographic Notes

30 A large buffalo cow and calf move from right to left across the page. The cow arches over the calf, which is under her and within the range of her legs. Fringed beard and forelegs on the adult are apparent, as well as detailed horns, ears, tail, and split hooves. No eye is drawn on either the adult or the juvenile buffalo. Its tail makes a distinct downward curve. In this and none of the other related images does the calf have eyes represented. This is one of eight nearly identical drawings in this ledger with a buffalo female and calf: Plates 11-18. For further discussion, see plate 11. 31 Warrior on a red horse wears a single-trail full eagle bonnet, edged with red cloth, identical to the headdress in PILA Plates (Plates 9, 10, 13-15, 17, 26-34, 36). He wears a gray (pencil) shirt, Garman silver armbands, gray clout, and leggings with zigzagged black-and-white beadwork edges, the lightning pattern (see references for plate 13). He carries an upright, curved saber in his right hand. The stallion has its tail tied with red cloth. It wears a silver or German silver headstall (Kahn, 2003: 72, 81). Media: Lead pencil outlines and fill; red watercolor fill and details
