Drawn in 1879 by one or more Northern Cheyenne prisoners in the Dodge City jail held for trial after breaking out of Fort Robinson. Northern Cheyenne men documented as jailed in the Dodge City (Ford County) jail, 1879, are: Wild Hog, Porcupine, Old Crow, Strong Left Hand, Noisy Walker (or Old Man), Tangle Hair, Blacksmith. Donation to the Kansas Historical Society in 1922 by Sallie Straughn of Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Straughn was matron of the Dodge City jail in 1878 during the incarceration of the Cheyenne when her husband, John W. Straughn, was the Dodge City jailer. This is one of four extant ledger notebooks made by one or more survivors of the Fort Robinson break-out while awaiting trial in Dodge City (1879). The others are the Wild Hog Ledger-Schoyen; Wild Hog-Kansas State Historical Society; and Porcupine-Schoyen. All of these are posted on the PILA site.
