COURTING: A Man with Eagle Fan Courts a Woman in 2nd Phase Navajo Chiefs Blanket

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: A Man with Eagle Fan Courts a Woman in 2nd Phase Navajo Chiefs Blanket The man on the right faces the woman. Both have red facepaint along the vertical edges of their hairlines. The man wears a skunk courtship blanket with white stripe (undyed selvedge edges) running down the back (see discussion, Plate 9). He wears a hairpipe breastplate with a German silver ornament attached at the bottom center. A long German silver hairplate ornament with immature golden eagle feather attached between the third and fourth hairplate reaches below his feet. He carries an eagle feather fan in Plate 28 (see discussion), except this one has four feathers. The mans leggings have a Northern Cheyenne beadwork pattern of alternating black and white boxes. His red breechclout flaps are visible below the blanket, drawn so they reach below his feet. The woman also wears formal dress. Her blue-and-red-and-white striped blanket is second phase Navajo chiefs blanket. She wears a choker, and she has a dress under the blanket with a pattern of dots. Her dress tabs show below the blanket, blue with white (undyed selvedge) ends; her leggings are dark with white stripe running vertically along the seam.
