HUNTING: Man on a Blue Horse Shoots Four Arrows into a Buffalo

Ethnographic Notes

Horizontal Plate 17 HUNTING SCENE: Man on a Blue Horse Shoots Four Arrows into a Buffalo This man resembles the hunter of Plate 13. His torso is elongated and curves unnaturally. His dark hair is shaded with lead pencil, and his body, arms, and one leg are outlined in pencil. The arms, shirt, and breechclout are red fill, and he wears leggings of dark trade cloth (pencil shading) with the undyed selvedge forming a vertical stripe lengthwise along his leg. His feet are outlined but not filled with color. He holds reins in his left hand, and with both hands he holds a bow with an arrow nocked and ready to shoot. His blue horse rears on his hind legs, and the front legs overlap the buffalo. The horse has white neck and head; the rest of the body is blue; and the long, full tail is detailed with dark shading. Hooves are uncolored. The buffalo rears upward on the page, parallel to the horse. It is outlined in pencil and shaded heavily. Details include two curved horns, split hooves, arched tail with tuft of hair at the end, and shaggy hair on the top of his head, chin front, and front legs. Most striking are the four arrows, parallel and identical, along the animal's side. Blood flows from each wound, and blood also is visible coming from its mouth
