Two Bighorn Rams
Ethnographic Notes
Two bighorn rams, in Lakota called “spoon horns” (hecinskayapi---Buechel, 1970: 170), because the horns were used as ladles. Compare Plates 58, 50, 22 & 21. It is likely that Black Road, a visionary who must often have fasted in remote locations, may have encountered these wild sheep when they came to investigate his intrusion into their realm. The two tracks apparently were for an original idea of the composition, which the artist abandoned.
