Zotom Sketchbook - Taylor Museum Provenance

Front Cover

This sketchbook of 14 drawings was owned by Clarence M. Schultz of Summit, New Jersey. Zotom, or Podaladalte ("Biter"), created these drawings in September 1876 while imprisoned at Fort Marion, the Spanish Fort San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. The inscription written in pencil on the inside front cover of the sketchbook, identifying Zotom and providing the date, is in the hand of Captain Richard Henry Pratt, in charge of the 72 Plains Indian prisoners in carcerated at Fort Marion from 1874 to 1878.

The Taylor Museum at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center purchased the sketchbook from Karen McManus of East Lebanon, Maine, in 1982. Schultz was her husband's grandfather.
