"This book contains pictures made by an untrained Indian of the Kiowa tribe. Mr. W. E. Quinett [sic, W. H. Quinette], a partner of Capt. [Frank] Rice at Fort Sill Oklahoma was commissioned by a representative of the Smithsonian Institute to secure a collection of drawings by a native Indian. Mr. Quinett[e] had a Kiowa brave make two books. This one he gave to Capt. Rice. The pictures are to illustrate events in the history of the tribe. They were made about 1885. W. S. Nye in his book 'Carbine and Lance, the Story of Old Fort Sill' writes W. H. Quinett[e] came to Fort Sill in 1878. He died in Lawton in 1935.”

Collection of 22 colored ledger drawings by an unidentified Kiowa artist depicting battle scenes between various bands of Indians, between Indians and U.S. soldiers, and hunting scenes. The Kiowa Chief Heidsieck, or Gaapiatan, is featured in two of the drawings.

The drawings were commissioned by W. H. Quinette at Fort Sill, Oklahoma Territory, about 1885, and given to Captain Frank Rice of the U.S. Army, and then presumably collected by William K. Bixby.
