“The two Indians shuting deers” (Artist’s inscription, verso)

“Depicted is a deer hunt. Three deer, one of them wounded, are fleeing from hunters. Using the same convention to show depth as in Nº17, Andrew Fox here bridges that depth by having the wounded deer turn its head to look at the hunters. The two running hunters are dressed in hooded coats made of striped trade blankets, which indicate that it is a winter scene. The mounted hunter, also with a blanket wrapped around his waist, leads the horses of the running hunters.” (p.32)
