Ethnographic Notes

A few words with Elk Head Woman. Again, her rich clothing and higher social position are the reasons the artist has specified her identity, in order to reinforce his own reputation among his associates. Her beaded leggings mark her as the daughter of an honored member of the Women's Sewing Society. The silver-decorated belt drop shown trailing below her expensive Mexican blanket are additional indicators of her family's wealth and high status.
