Ethnographic Notes

p. 18 TEXT. Newspaper Clipping, 1879, about Harpers and Frank Leslie's photographers. The article describes two groups taking photographs of the Cheyenne men imprisoned in Ford County jail, the creators of this ledger. The clipping reads: "The Indian Illustrated. Parties representing Harper Brothers' Publishing house were in the city Tuesday and took photographs of the seven Indian prisoners confined in the ford County jail. The pictures will appear in Harper's Weekly. The names of the Indian prisoners are: "Old Crow, Wild Hog, Run Fast, Tall Man, Young Man, Frizzle Head, and Old Man. A party from Frank Leslie's publishing house arrived Wednesday morning for a similar purpose. Our Cheyenne captives will appear cartooned in Frank Leslie's Weekly, and thus our eastern friends can feast their eyes on the gentle savage from an illustrated stand-point." The illustrations were to appear in the two weekly periodicals. However, ultimately nothing appeared. The article is from a Dodge City newspaper. p. 19 TEXT. Handwritten List of Seven Cheyenne Men and Ledger Provence. The handwritten, pencil note says: Cheyenne Indians confined at Dodge City for the murder of whites during 1878 in Kansas. Next is a list of apparently Cheyenne names and their translations. However, the Cheyenne is inaccurate (Low and Powers 2012: 19). The names listed are: "Hagetta chief-Wild Hog; Norrnenaha-Left Hand; Quamuttse-Blacksmith; Coutsamaha-Old Man; Ituta-Tall Man; Meou-Porcupine; Old Crow." The handwriting continues: "These drawings were made by Porcupine while in prison by me purchased from him Apr 4/79 at the prison S. M. Wyatt."
