COURTING: Couple with Dog

Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: Couple with Dog The woman on the right-hand side bends over so her face is close to the man's. She is taller. Her braid is wrapped and hangs down the front of her blanket. She wears a choker. Her blanket is dark (pencil fill) and covers her completely. It reaches below her knees. Her legs are uncolored (bare?) and she has three stripes (trails) around each ankle. The man wears a skunk courting blanket (see Plate 9 for discussion). His long braid hangs down the front of the blanket, and it is wrapped in otter fur with the ends dangling. His breechclout and leggings are made of the same dark stroud cloth. Behind him is a dog, with erect ears, pointed muzzle, and arched tail over its back. This is the only dog in the four Dodge City 1879 ledgers.
