Ethnographic Notes

Vertical COURTING: Man on White Horse Meets Woman in Dark Blanket The woman stands to the right facing the man. Her hair is dark, and the braid not visible. Her face has red paint. The dark blanket covers her from chin to below her waist. Her dress shows, red-and-blue striped with fringe. Her leggings are dark stroud with a white vertical stripe up the shins (undyed edges of strouding). Her feet are uncolored and resemble hooves. The man wears a long German silver hairplate ornament that reaches down the side of the horse. It ends with two red cloth streamers. His red shirt has a centered placard with gray-and-white ornament, probably beadwork. One legging shows under his dark skunk blanketdark with the vertical stripe colored blue. He holds a blue bag or object under his left arm, and his left hands hold the reins. His right hand holds a quirt with two strands. The horse is white with blue markings along the made and down the back.
