Ethnographic Notes

The drawings were added to the ledger beginning in the back, thence to the front. In use, the book was oriented horizontally, the cover folded down, toward the artist, and the first drawing (Plate 88) was done on the facing page. That page was then folded down, and the second drawing done on the top page of the next section; etc. In only one instance (Plate 18), was a drawing made on the back side of a sheet, as part of an extended composition.
