The other Plains species of cervid, a buck white-tail deer, in Lakota “long tail” (sintehanska---Buechel,1970: 454). According to his associate He Dog, Black Road's “personal charm was the long-tailed deer, apparently one source of his power...The fork-horned animals were considered particularly potent carriers of magic, prominently the long-tailed deer. Doubtless, however, there was special, secret significance attaching to them for Black Road, which he never explained to anyone” (Blish, 1934: 180 & 187).
