A long-billed curlew

Ethnographic Notes

A long-billed curlew, which the Lakota call ticanica tanka (Buechel, 1970: 474). Compare Plate 76. The bird at right is a non-descript raptor. Although it would be larger, it is shown smaller than the curlew, because it is further from the viewer, an intentional use of perspective that is often overlooked in Plains Indian drawings. Other examples of perspective are in Plates 70, 66, 65, 64, 33, & 5.
