The most-likely candidate is his younger brother, Stinking Bear, who was a “Bear Medicine Man,” according to his grandson (One Feather, 2014). The weapon is a muzzle-loading fusil. The trajectory of the round, lead bullet is the critical detail which reveals this as a mystical event. Although the marksman aimed accurately to strike the animal in the head, the bear is shown blithely blowing the bullet aside. It is, then, a supernatural presence, and the event is in the nature of an adoption.
