Tipi

Ethnographic Notes

Black Road is documented as a painter of tipis: “Black Road set up a sacred tepee of bison hide, and on it...painted pictures from my vision” (Neihardt, 1932: 162). It is probable that Black Road immortalized this particular, beautifully-painted tipi, because it belonged to a relative. The leading candidate would be his brother Stinking Bear, who is probably depicted in Plate 15, in mystical communion with a black bear. His grandson reported that Stinking Bear was a “a noted bear medicine man and used a bear paw in his healing ceremonies” (One Feather, 2014). The tipi is shown in right profile, with the door at the right. It is likely that a second bear figure guarded the opposite side of the entrance.
