Right: Blank Left: BIRD. Female turkey with 17 poults faces left to right. The mother fills almost half the page. The neck is striped red, to indicate textured, naked flesh instead of feathers. Turkeys’ necks turn red when they are alarmed. Her legs are fleshy, with three distinct claws on each foot. The poults are more abbreviated in form, with lines for beaks and legs extending from small, lumpy, black bodies. This is one of many examples of mothers and offspring in these notebooks. Media: Birds are outlined in pencil and filled with smudged black ink.
