“Indian Drawing of 'Shellbanks” (Artist’s inscription, recto)

“Shown here is the main building at Shellbanks (Figure 12), which was a large tract of rich farmland near the Hampton Institute. All the young men who remained at Hampton during the summer months were required to do farm chores at Shellbanks. Bear’s Heart lavished great attention on the architectural details in this drawing. His style is something he evidently developed during his imprisonment at Fort Marion. There are a number of other extant drawings by Bear's Heart that give equal attention to architecture.” (p.24)
