HUNTING SCENE: Man + Horse in Red with Bow and Quirt; Buffalo Wounded with Arrows

Ethnographic Notes

pp. 34-35 HUNTING SCENE. Diptych with Buffalo and Hunter on Red Horse with Bow p. 34 HUNTING SCENE, Buffalo The bison fills the page, facing right to left and rising diagonally upward. The back hooves are off the page. A single arrow sticks from the profiled back, buried mostly to the fletch. No blood runs from the wound or the animal's mouth, so this is the moment of impact. Shaggy hair is drawn on the top of the skull, along the neck, and fringing the front legs. The eye is outlined and left unshaded, so it makes a circular, white orb. This resembles the buffalo in Plates 2, 8, and 9. Media: Lead pencil outline, details, and fill p. 35 HUNTING SCENE, Man on Red Horse. The hunter resembles the individual who appears in Plates 2, 14, 15, 16, 22, 24, and 25, except for coloring and weapons. This is probably Porcupine himself. His hair is indicated only on his left, perhaps a braid. His entire face is painted red. Strands of a necklace show at his neck. His outstretched left hand holds a quirt, touching the rump of the horse. His right hand holds a bow and reins of the horse. He wears a red shirt, and two pencil-shaded (dark) breech clout flaps show against the side of the horse. The horse also rises slightly diagonally from right to left across the page, parallel to the buffalo on the contiguous page. The rear legs are off the page, so the hooves do not show. The horse is outlined in pencil, with ears, reins, tail details. Fill is red crayon, with the front hooves left uncolored. Media: Lead pencil outline, details, and fill; crayon
