Commissioned and annotated by Colonel Richard Henry Pratt (1840-1924, US Army), who conducted “educational experiments” with Native prisoners at Fort Marion before going on to found the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
• Pratt sent the sketchbook to General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) to solicit support for Indian education efforts.
• Inherited by Philemon Tecumseh Sherman (1867-1941) or other family members.
• Subsequently inherited by General Sherman's granddaughter, Eleanor Sherman Fitch (1876-1959).
• Gift to Museum of American Indian, New York.
• Transfer to National Museum of American Indian, 2003.
